Judge grants temporary injunction for Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood in SC

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) –

A federal judge has granted Planned Parenthood a temporary restraining order and injunction, allowing them to receive Medicaid funds.

In July, Governor Henry McMaster removed $16 million from the state’s budget that he said went to Planned Parenthood. Some Republicans spoke out against this, saying almost all of the money went to family planning and abstinence and less than $100,000 actually went to Planned Parenthood.

“There are a variety of agencies, clinics, and medical entities in South Carolina that receive taxpayer funding to offer important women’s health and family planning services without performing abortions,” McMaster said in a July 2017 statement. “Taxpayer dollars must not directly or indirectly subsidize abortion providers like Planned Parenthood.”

When announced, Planned Parenthood called McMaster’s actions a “political stunt.”

In a statement from his office, Governor McMaster says he will “continue to do” everything in his power “to make sure no taxpayer” contributes to abortions in South Carolina.

The statement says:

The governor is obviously disappointed with the judge’s decision, but he will continue to do all that he can to make sure no taxpayer dollars either directly or indirectly subsidize abortions in South Carolina. That’s why he ordered HHS to develop the waiver that it submitted to CMS for approval last week and will continue to fight until every South Carolinian can know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that their taxpayer dollars are not being used to perform abortions.

It should note that due to the Hyde amendment, federal funds are barred from paying for abortions, except in the case of saving a woman’s life or due to incest or rape.
