AMARILLO – “Medicaid: Taking Stock of an Essential Program in Uncertain Times,” will be this month’s topic of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s Texas Military Program webinar on June 21.
The one-hour webinar will begin at 10 a.m. and is free and open to anyone interested, but registration is required, said Andrew Crocker, AgriLife Extension program specialist in gerontology and health, Amarillo.
This training session will address Medicaid, the state-federal program that provides essential services and benefits for low-income families and for many residents who have special health care needs, said Rachel Brauner, program coordinator with the agency’s Texas Military Program in College Station.
“Military caregivers and their families might find themselves interacting with Medicaid in cases where TRICARE and ECHO coverage is not enough or when family members are not eligible for TRICARE and/or ECHO coverage,” Brauner said.
“This year, there has been significant discussion about reforming and changing Medicaid in terms of the way it is funded, the services provided and who may be eligible for the program. It is important for military support personnel, caregivers and military families to be aware of developments that are or might be underway in the Medicaid program.”
The presenter will be Dr. Christopher Plein, professor of public administration and Eberly Family Professor for Outstanding Public Service at West Virginia University.
Plein has been involved in program evaluation studies by West Virginia’s Department of Health and Human Resources in areas such as Medicaid and welfare reform. In addition, he has been involved in research, evaluation studies and training efforts concentrating on military family support services and health care insurance access.
This and other webinars are offered through AgriLife Extension’s Military Program to provide professional development and interactive resources for those unable to leave home for training, Crocker said.
The Military Families Learning Network Military Caregiving concentration will apply for continuing education credit from the University of Texas School of Social Work for credentialed and licensed professionals. Certificates of completion will also be available for participants interested in receiving training hours.
