New Hampshire Medicaid funds can now be used for gender reassignment surgery after lawmakers signed off on a rule change Thursday afternoon.

This means people on Medicaid seeking gender reassignment surgery can have it approved on a case-by-case basis, as long as it is deemed medically necessary.

Advocates in the transgender community said this is about basic fairness.

“I am really, really thrilled, as a non-binary transgender person myself, that transgender Medicaid recipients will no longer be categorically excluded,” said Linds Jakows, of Freedom NH.

Opponents of the rule change argued that it will be too costly to taxpayers and said the federal provision mandating this funding is about to be rolled back by the Trump administration.
