States will have a full year rather than six months to redetermine Medicaid eligibility for enrollees when the Covid-19 public health emergency comes to an end under new guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

The extension will allow states to carry out eligibility reviews on around 81 million Medicaid enrollees without straining their administrative systems and without creating a “renewal bump” that could persist for years to come, the CMS said in a letter dated Aug. 13 to state health officials.
