ALBANY — The state Medicaid program could soon be covering transition-related care for transgendered youth.
The state Health Department Wednesday proposed a new regulation that would extend Medicaid coverage for transgendered youth under the age of 18 who are undergoing cross-sex hormone therapy and other services.

The regulation would also require that the state Medicaid program cover gender reassignment surgery for those at least 18 years old. Current rules allow for such coverage, but don’t require it.

But the state would not pay for procedures to reverse gender reassignment-related procedures.

The proposed regulation can’t take affect until after a 45-day public comment period.
